The streets surrounding the Presidential Office Building are Boai Road, Chongqing South Road, Guiyang Street, and Baoqing Road. The main entrance faces the expansive Ketagalan Boulevard, directly opposite Jingfu Gate (East Gate). Both the Presidential Office Building and Jingfu Gate are designated national historic sites.
In 1996 the mayor of Taipei at that time, Chen Shui-bian, renamed Chieh Shou Road as Ketagalan Boulevard. “Ketagalan” is the name of the indigenous group that once inhabited the area, showing Taiwan's respect for indigenous cultures. Today, Ketagalan Boulevard has become a place for the Taiwanese to express the will of the people. It has been the scene of authoritarian suppression under martial law and calls for democracy after martial law was lifted. It has heard the chorus of voices from every era seeking a thriving democracy in Taiwan.
