08The Birth of the Presidential Office Building – Presidential Office Building Colors and Materials

The Presidential Office Building was built in a late-Renaissance style, known as the “Tatsuno” style, named after Tatsuno Kingo. With assistance from architects Nagano Uheiji and Moriyama Matsunosuke, Tatsuno's architectural style uses special features such as English red brick and off-white bands on the building's facade.

The materials used to construct the Presidential Office Building include native Taiwanese timber and quicklime, along with imported elements from Japan such as brick cladding, bronze column ornaments, and patented Tajima-style steel windows. In 1935 the fifth floor was damaged by a fire that also spread to the southern corridors. During the restoration process the original timber and stone-tile roof was replaced with a flat roof made of reinforced concrete and steel beams.
